Most compressors/gates provide insufficient compression for music, combined with gating that “swallows” transients or closes early, clipping fades and ending reverbs. The 166XL’s excellent hardware ensures that the compression and gating provide versatility and excellent sonic performance in situations where other compressors/gates tend to produce unwanted processing artefacts.

When using the 166XL’s attack and return controls, performers and sound engineers will find that the center settings provide classic dbx compression, with the entire control range producing sounds that range from slow equalization to aggressive peak limiting.

The 166XL’s advanced gate circuitry uses an all-new, software-dependent timing algorithm to reproduce an extremely smooth return response, even with complex signals such as voice or reverb decay. dbx engineers have continued to take advantage of the wide dynamic range and high precision of dbx’s V1 voltage-controlled amplifier to create an extra-wide threshold range and provide the best gating performance for any application.

Separate precision LED displays for indication of gain reduction, compression threshold and gate provide quick and precise adjustment, while the 166XL’s intuitive controls allow users to easily smooth out uneven levels, add support to guitars, drums or tighten mixes. In Stereo couple mode, Channel 1 controls become Master controls, and Channel 2 controls follow closely to ensure a stable stereo image, even at high levels of compression, with True RMS Power Summing™. Professionals and beginners alike will appreciate that the 166XL is quick and easy to set up on first use, especially when using the Auto attack and Auto release features. Difficult tasks have now become simple, thanks to the functionality of the 166XL and the ability to use either the hard knee algorithm or OverEasy®.
